Saffron latte is a simple, creamy drink made with milk, a small pinch of saffron, cardamom and cinnamon. This version contains no coffee or tea: its golden colour and floral aroma come from the saffron infusion.
Makes 2 small cups · 10 minutes to infuse saffron, plus a few minutes to warm the milk · Naturally free of tea and coffee.

Ingredients for 2 small cups
- 250 ml milk or a plant-based alternative
- 1 small pinch of saffron threads
- 2 tablespoons warm water
- 1 teaspoon honey or cane sugar, to taste
- ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1 pinch ground cinnamon
How to make saffron latte
- Infuse. Place the saffron threads in 2 tablespoons of warm water and leave for about 10 minutes.
- Warm the milk. Heat the milk gently in a small pan. Watch it carefully and avoid a vigorous boil.
- Add spices and sweetness. Stir in the cardamom, cinnamon and honey or sugar.
- Add saffron. Pour in the infusion, including the threads, and stir. Let the flavours mingle briefly over gentle heat.
- Serve. Divide between two small cups and enjoy at a comfortable drinking temperature.
Serving tips and variations
For a foamy finish, froth a little of the warm milk and spoon it on top. Almond pastries or a lightly spiced biscuit make a pleasant accompaniment.
For a vegan latte, choose an unsweetened plant drink and cane sugar rather than honey. If you prefer two larger mugs, scale the milk and other ingredients together to suit your taste.
Enjoy the drink for its flavour and aroma. Research on standardised saffron extracts does not establish a mood or relaxation benefit for this homemade latte.
Frequently asked questions
Does this latte contain caffeine?
The listed ingredients contain no coffee or tea. A chai version is different because it uses black tea.
Can I use oat milk?
Yes. Choose a version you enjoy; a barista-style oat drink may froth more easily. Check the label for allergens and added sugar.
Why soak the saffron first?
Infusing the threads helps distribute their colour and aroma through the milk. Add both the liquid and threads to avoid wasting the spice.
